Vision, Mission & Methods

"In spite of the changes in women's roles in society....many of today's girls fall into traditional patterns of low self-image, self-doubt, and self-censorship of their creative and intellectual potential. Although all children experience confusion and a faltering sense of self at adolescence, girls' self-regard drops further than boys' and never catches up."
- Peggy Orenstein, Schoolgirls

Our Vision:

At Girls Moving Forward, we envision a world where girls are able to fully develop their intellectual, creative, and social abilities. In our world, girls have an active academic community of parents, teachers, peers, and young adult mentors who support their growth and the achievement of their goals. Because they are invested in their own success, girls take charge of their educational experience and utilize resources that help them to thrive in school.

Our Mission:

Girls Moving Forward is an education and empowerment service dedicated to ending the gender-confidence gap in school. Through hands-on tutoring and empowerment, our mission is to help girls gain confidence and competence both in and out of the classroom while developing positive, girl-centered communities.

Our Methods:

Girls Moving Forward offers a holistic approach to academic intervention. We combine academic tutoring with social and emotional support to help students make integrated improvements in their scholastic performance and overall self-esteem.

When girls lack self-confidence, when they are distracted by social problems in their peer groups, and when they internalize social messages that punish intelligence in women, they learn to turn their focus away from their academic abilities. Our holistic approach seeks to turn the focus back to the student’s abilities. We aim to find each student’s academic skill gaps and the deeper root causes of her success and failure in order to make lasting change in each girl’s life.
