Location: Emeryville, CA

Moving Forward Education is a tutoring and mentoring company dedicated to creating gender-specific learning environments that change the landscape of education.  Through engaging small-group instruction and intensive social/emotional support, our program leaves a lasting positive impression on our students’ lives and futures.  Moving Forward Education is an explicitly feminist, progressive, and social-justice oriented company.

Summary:
The Executive Director is responsible for the overall operation of the organization, providing leadership for programs that enable youth to become confident, successful, and responsible citizens.

Responsibilities:

Leadership
-Work collaboratively with the CEOs to develop and refine the organization’s overall mission, goals, and array of services.
-Create and maintain systems to manage organizational efficiency and prepare for growth.
-Work as a team with the CEOs to make and implement decisions, coordinate meetings, and coach staff to exceed goals.
-Inspire and motivate staff and volunteers to be creative and innovative; support them to explore new and different approaches and resources to keep programs flexible and responsive to student and school site needs.
-Create an environment that allows staff to work at their fullest capacities, bringing out their strengths and coaching them through their areas of weakness.
-Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate staff within the organization.  Take disciplinary actions as necessary.
-Assign staff duties, encouraging their participation and ideas.
-Conduct ongoing staff meetings and professional development sessions.

Partnership
-Oversee high-quality programming in each of our schools, and with each of our students.
-Establish and maintain strong working relationships with the local public school system and individual participating schools, serving as a liaison and educational advocate for youth.
-Oversee the curriculum development team’s work to create program and school-specific lessons and activities.
-Serve as a community leader and MFE representative at meetings, events, and conferences.
-Sell the program to local students, parents, teachers, and administrators.  Many of our services are free to schools and students, but their promotion and adoption requires a grassroots sales approach.
-Develop and implement outreach strategies to get new youth to participate in educational programming.
-Seek creative grant funding; maintain grant compliance and documentation for existing grants.
-Ensure that programs remain within budgets.

-Demonstrate flexibility, patience, and calm in a busy setting.
-Strong oral, presentation, and written skills.
-Basic computer literacy a must: minimum proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  Mac and PC literacy required.
-Executive impact: ability to work with all levels of administration and convey confidence and professionalism in all instances.

Experience Desired:
-Minimum two years teaching experience in traditional or non-traditional settings.
-Strong classroom management skills.
-Experience in curriculum development.
-Knowledge of school district systems and politics.
-Experience working with youth K-12, with diverse backgrounds.
-Minimum two years management experience, with some administrative and budgetary responsibilities.
-Experience coaching and developing young professionals.
-Experience successfully directing under-performing staff members.
-Sales and outreach experience.

Education:
-Bachelor’s Degree required, with courses in education, recreation, psychology, sociology, women’s studies and business administration preferred. Graduate degree or teaching credential a plus.
